Ponds of Oristano

The ponds of the province of Oristano deserve a particular attention; they are included, according to the Ramsar agreement, among the damp areas of international importance. We suggest to the keen naturalists a visit to the Sinis marshes – Mistras, Cabras and Sale Porcus – and Pauli Maiori which are the nesting places of (red, white and ash-grey) herons, egrets, cormorants, wild duck, bald-coot, rare Sultan fowls and marvellous pink flamingos, and also to the Turr’e Seu nature reserve for a walk through the uncontaminated maquis vegetation.

Ramsar agreement

It is an international agreement related (relevant) to the damp areas; it was signed on 2nd of February 1971 in Iran. Up to that time these areas were considered unhealthy and therefore they were destroyed. As a matter of fact, damp areas have a primary importance for the life of the flora and the fauna characteristic of this habitat. Ponds, marshes and lagoons represent, in fact, the basic environment for migrant water birds. In Sardinia, the areas included in the Ramsar agreement are eight; six of these ones are in province of Oristano: Ponds of Cabras and Mar'e Pauli, Mistras, Pauli Maiori, Sale Porcus, S'Ena Arrubia, and finally the ponds of S.Giovanni, Marceddì and Corru S'Ittiri.
